Hi dear reader !
First of all, welcome on this blog.
My name is Lucile and I am 23.
My passions : travels and photography.
First things come first…
Why did I create this blog ?
I like to write, to put my thoughts on paper. I always liked writing. Actually, this blog is my third one. I won’t talk to you about my Skyblog from the 2000s, but after that, I also started a blog when I was doing a University exchange in Mexico. But I gave up that blog. Indeed, I created it once I was already there, and I didn’t really have time to learn how to do a nice blog. Without being well informed, I created an Over Blog – I shouldn’t have ! It would have been way better to start with WordPress directly, but I knew nothing about it. Therefore my blog didn’t really have a future. Moreover, I created it only for Mexico, which didn’t leave place for my other travels. For these reasons, I had to give it up once I was back. Poor little guy, but it is still doing okay, since I still get visitors, even with its old fashioned look.
Since my blog of Mexico, I haven’t been writing anymore. Thus, I love the idea to write down the different places I visited, good adresses, etc. I travel a lot, and I love to find gorgeous unknown places, restaurants that make you jump to the ceiling. But with time, one forgets it. And one regrets to have forgotten.
To get further in photography
Foremost, it would be interesting for you to know more about my start…
Before my awakening…
I always have liked photography, but it took me time to really get into it. Before my “awakening”, I took pictures with a digital camera and with my cellphone. I already started to do photo montages on Photofiltre with the age of 13. Before my “awakening”, the Photography universe seemed to me very complicated, very technic. The Adobe Softwares appeared to me inaccessible, impossible to decipher. Once in a while, I used the Reflex Camera of my mum, the Canon 450D, only on the automatic mode because I didn’t get anything about the settings.
My awakening in 2015
My “awakening” for three years happened when I came back from Mexico, extremely frustrated to not have been taking nice travel pictures. Since I had a phone with a lot of Megapixels, I thought it would be enough, and anyway, I was too scared to get a camera stolen. Except that this will of having a camera grew in my mind during these 8 long months I spent in Mexico.
Just returned from there, I started to decipher the User Manual of the Canon 450 D of my mum. I spent a lot of time reading and making exercices in order to get better. I learned a lot from different blogs and watched tutorial videos endlessly.
Since that moment, I never stopped learning. I spent a very big amount of time training. That’s exactly realizing this fact that made me think : “You have been learning during three years long, you could also help other people learning”.
Some people helped me much, without even knowing it, because I trained for free on the internet. That’s also by inspiring me from artists that I got better. I would like to make some place here, for all those people who helped me and inspired me.
With a constant aim of getting better in my own work and doing retranscription of my knowledge, this will force me to get really deep into topics. Besides, I like to have my own project, and this one has been well thought, since I have been thinking of it during months already. This blog gives me a personal aim, and makes me work for something I love, what else shall I ask for ?
With working on technics and making a retrospective on my own photos, I will take time to analyse it and try to understand why they “work” and why they don’t. I think that work is very constructive, because behind the theory is always the practice. You will see in that blog that there are “natural laws” in art in general, and so does in photography, which I find fascinating. It is also interesting to seek to apply these laws to obtain a certain equilibrium in photographs. Besides, I will also share with you my failures, because it is always important to learn from one’s mistakes.
To give another dimension to my pictures
Untill recently, I never printed out my pictures in large format. I had a look at it on my small screens, on my computer, but not more. However, I had the feeling that a photograph was not really ended if it had to stay in a “box” (hard disc, SD card, computer). A photograph can only be fully appreciated if it is printed out.
In that case, a photograph can become “art”, and transmit emotions which were untill then flanged on the small screen. Art can be invited in a bedroom, in a living room, to enhance one’s home. Art transports, recalls memories, invites to travel. That’s why it will soon be also possible to buy prints in large format and in limited edition on that website. It’s aim is to make you travel too.
To emancipate myself from Instagram
The fact to give another dimension to my pictures makes me want to emancipate myself from Instagram at the same time.
I love Instagram
Instagram, I like it, a lot. That’s with Instagram that I found my first inspiration and with Instagram that I built my photographic path. If you go down my Instagram feed till the beginning, you can still find my first pictures, when I started not using the automatic mode anymore. Back then, I was learning the basics. That is to say to learn having a nice depth of field for example, like on the following picture.
What I like with Instagram, is to be able to have live feedbacks. I know that some pictures are more appreciated than others, even if that is approximative (it depends also on the time of posting and the Hashtags used). The fact of having a live feedback is very interesting. It happened to me to share a picture which I found average, and which was loved on Instagram. That allows me to question my work constantly, and get better.
But I don’t want to be dependent
But on Instagram, one likes, one zaps, one likes, one zaps. A picture is drowned in the large stream of content. Photographs appear small, and the quality is lowered since images are automatically compressed.
I think that Instagram is a great tool for creating a community and to begin to get known, but one should not become dependent of a platform. I noticed a few weeks ago that the algorithm of Instagram changed for example. Pictures don’t show ranked by time of publishing anymore in the feed, but by “affinities”. If Instagram thinks that you could like one content, it shows it to you. If content is sponsored, it comes up also.
That had direct repercussions for example on the number of likes of my publications. As I have a little Instagram account (3 000 followers), I do not do the weight next to the behemoths (+50K) which appear on the top of the feed. It is therefore even more difficult to stand out from before, hence my desire to do something different.
To share with you
As I said before, it has been three years since I accumulated knowledge in the field of photography. At first, when you do not know anything about something, everything seems extremely difficult. It is step by step that you overcome difficulties and go through stages. This is so in learning any new thing. Except that once one masters something, one always tend to denigrate it. One says that it’s easy, you just have to know the technics. One forgets the moment when you admired people who knew what you know now.
However, if one has been slow understanding something, it is obvious that there are people who are in this case today. And that’s why I also want to share my experience with you, to help you move forward.
After all this time spent training, I know good websites and good Youtube channels to help you progress. I would also like to share them with you here.
To make a few steps closer to a dream
When you are 23, it is not necessarily easy to know what you want to do with your life. In general, we follow the path of studies, the highway to the first job. We struggled so much during the studies with low salaries of trainees, that we dream of a better situation. I fully understand this thinking, but I have a slightly different view of my future from other people. I’m not looking for tranquility, the straight line Master-Long contract job-Car-Buying an apartment. I had my master and that is already good! But for now, what makes me vibrate is traveling. I have had my driver’s license for three and a half years and I have never bought a car. It is very paradoxical, but it allows me to stay mobile because I am not attached to any bank loan.
I like to go on a trip to better come back. Like that, I am never tired, I am happy all the time. Happy to go on an adventure, then happy to come back and see my loved ones.
The building of this blog is also for me a way to become a little more nomadic. I know that a blog can become a source of income if you work hard on it. Honestly, I do not know at all if I will earn money with my blog one day, but I want to try the experiment. It does not cost me anything more than hours spent writing and training on Web Marketing ** something that I also love **. My dream is to be a nomadic worker. Have my laptop and be able to work everywhere all the time.
I do not really like the idea of having a dream and not doing anything to make it happen. That’s why I started. Will you follow me on this adventure?
See you soon and don’t forget !
Practice makes perfect
